Louis Joliet (September 21, 1645 – 1700), was a French Canadian explorer. Joliet and missionary Father Jacques Marquette, a Catholic priest, were the first white men to explore and map the Mississippi River.[1] They passed through the St. Louis area in 1673, and five years later La Salle claimed the entire valley for France.
