Wellston is a city in St. Louis County. The population was 2,460 at the 2000 census.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 mi², all land.


As of the census of 2000, there were 2,460 people, 779 households, and 578 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,732.6/mi². There were 961 housing units at an average density of 1,067.5/mi². The racial makeup of the city was 6.30% White, 92.07% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.06% of the population.

There were 779 households out of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 22.3% were married couples living together, 44.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 23.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.08 and the average family size was 3.64.

In the city the population was spread out with 35.7% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,596, and the median income for a family was $22,625. Males had a median income of $23,264 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $8,262. About 34.2% of families and 39.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 50.1% of those under age 18 and 28.6% of those age 65 or over.
